Trail Overview
American Legion and Peoples State Forest are situated on opposite sides of the Farmington River’s West Branch in Barkhamsted. A 14-mile network of hiking trails provides opportunities for exploration of the forests’ rugged terrain with rocky cliffs, spectacular waterfalls, and breathtaking views of the Farmington River Valley. The trails lead past several historic and cultural sites, including old mills, a soapstone quarry, and a former Indian settlement known as the Barkhamsted Lighthouse.
Additionally, the Austin F. Hawes Memorial Campground (open mid-April- Columbus Day) in American Legion offers thirty campsites near the river.
- Greenwoods Road, the primary road through Peoples State Forest, and Legion Road are closed from first snow until about May 1.
- Hunting is permitted in State Forests intersected by this trail. Please use caution and wear orange during hunting season.
