SUMMARY:Nature Nerds Hike - Chatfield Trail Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Nature Nerds for this 3 mile moderate loop hike featuring some dramatic rock cliffs overlooking Forster Pond\, some cool glacial erratics\, and a fun scramble through a rock “cave” overhang (alternate routes are possible).  There are a few short\, steep scramble sections. Closed-toe shoes with a good grip are a must. Water is essential\, snacks are a plus.  Hiking poles can be helpful. \nRenee Smith is a nature enthusiast who hopes to spread the love! Nature Nerd Hikes are an opportunity to explore the woods while employing all our senses\, trigger curiosity\, share and seek knowledge\, and nourish our souls in the great outdoors. WFR certified. DESCRIPTION:Its always a good time to take a closer look at the trees making up our forest! \nJoin CFPA’s Education Assistant\, Julia Sonen\, for a walk and talk focused on the trees that characterize Connecticut’s forests. Over the course of 3 miles on the Cockaponset and Pattaconk Trails\, we will introduce a variety of trees and shrubs\, discuss the ecological roles they play\, and learn some great tree facts. Both absolute beginners and those with some experience will enjoy diving a little deeper into the world of trees. \nPlease be prepared to walk 3+ miles over uneven terrain with some elevation change\, and bring water and any snacks you might need.  Sunscreen\, long sleeves\, good hiking boots and a hat are always suggested. Well-behaved and leashed dogs are welcome.

SUMMARY:Workshop for Woodland Owners: Forest Resilience – Planning and Management.
DESCRIPTION:UConn Extension Forestry will host a forest stand restoration and wildlife habitat enhancement workshop for woodland owners\, land trust stewards\, conservation commissioners\, and other interested members of the public. Rain date: August 1\, 2026. \nOn a portion of UConn Forest that has been seriously impacted by invasive insects and shrubs\, tree mortality\, and other forest health issues\, resilient forest management activities are being applied to restore forest productivity and enhance wildlife habitat for birds and other animals. Learn about developing achievable management objectives\, small-scale and low-impact tools and techniques for implementation\, extracting wood product value\, and how to develop appropriate skills for the work. Examples of soil protection best management practices (BMPs) and invasive shrub control are included\, as well as passive recreational enhancements.
