Where we teach and learn together....naturally
Professional Development Workshops
CFPA is proud to co-sponsor the nationally acclaimed Project Learning Tree (PLT) Program. CFPA offers hands-on professional development workshops for teachers and other educators on forests and related natural resources topics. PLT improves student learning. The PLT curricula helps students learn how to think, not what to think, about the environment. This design also strengthens students' critical thinking, team building, and problem solving skills. This award-winning program works for teachers and other educators because PLT:
- Materials are aligned with state and national education standards in science, social studies, language arts, math, and other subjects;
- Curriculum is broad-based: topics cover the total environment and are local, national, and global in scope;
- Provides the one great lesson a week you wish you had time to plan;
- Adapts to many contexts: classroom, playground, nature center, home. PLT can be easily adapted to various audiences: PreK-12 students, Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, nature center and museum visitors, 4-H clubs, homeschoolers and other community groups.
- Cross-curricular: easy to infuse its environmental lessons into science, language arts, special education, and other classes; and
- Engages both the student and educator.
When are the next workshops?
Please visit http://plt.org/events/index.cfm and select Connecticut.
Arrangements to hold a workshop during a school's professional development day are encouraged. Workshops can travel to your site and content is designed based on your group's needs.
Family Guide Training
Next session is Saturday, September 11, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at CFPA headquarters. Pre-registration strongly appreciated; bring completed Volunteer Information Form to session. Dress comfortably for outdoor trail activities and bring water and snack. Contact CFPA at 860-346-2372 or info@ctwoodlands.org to register.
For Communities:
Does your land trust, volunteer association, or other community group lead family activities or walks outdoors? As part of CFPA's WalkCT initiative, we are offering Community Family Guide Training to volunteers or staff of organizations who would like to lead hikes in their communities. These hands-on, half-day workshops are free and take place annually. Learn trail games, tips for teaching to family groups, and other engaging activities to help your program come alive.
For CFPA Volunteers:
CFPA also provides training for individuals who are interested in or already volunteering and leading hikes for CFPA as WalkCT Family Guides. Our Family Guides lead WalkCT Family Rambles, which are free, fun, and easygoing outings scheduled on the last weekend of every month and designed to introduce children and their caregivers to the great outdoors. Each WalkCT Family Guide is asked to choose and lead two simple hikes and participate in at least two training sessions each year. Each guide is encouraged to attend our safety training offering, and all have criminal background checks to alleviate issues of participant safety. To become a WalkCT Family Guide, please print, complete, and return the Volunteer Information Form. Both new and active WalkCT Family Guides can contact us at (860) 346-2372 or info@ctwoodlands.org to register for a training session.
Volunteer Information Forms can be returned to CFPA via one of the following ways:
- Mail it to: CFPA; 16 Meriden Rd.; Rockfall, CT 06481
- Fax it to: (860) 347-7463
