Fun for Families
Where we explore together....naturally
WalkCT Family Rambles
Bring the kids and enjoy fresh air and some quality time outdoors together. Led by trained WalkCT Family Guides, WalkCT Family Rambles are part of Connecticut Forest & Park Association's initiative, WalkCT—the path to health and happiness. These outings are free and held the last weekend of every month. Pre-registration is appreciated, but not required. Click here for more information and family ramble listings.
Letterboxing
Enjoy the world of letterboxing, in which you follow online clues to find a hidden box in the woods. Inside the box you'll find a stamp, inkpad and journal. Leave an impression of your stamp in the journal and make an impression of letterbox's stamp in your own journal. Fun for families and great and inexpensive way to enjoy the outdoors. To add CFPA's own stamp, carved by volunteers, to your journal, follow this link to the online clue. Don your detective caps and follow this link for clues to find CFPA's Tree Series. Happy trails... and stamping.
Family Adventure Packs
Engage a child on an outdoor journey of discovery! Family Adventure Packs are fun activities that will guide families in safely discovering Connecticut's outdoors.
Backpacks have rotated from the main branch of the following public libraries:
Berlin, Bloomfield, East Hartford, Farmington, Glastonbury,Hartford, Manchester, Southington, Suffield and West Hartford. Enjoy children's books, information on safety and responsibility in the outdoors, and hands-on activities that your family can do to explore the local trails, parks, and forests together. Prosser Public Library in Bloomfield and Southington Library are currently lending out Adventure Packs to library patrons.
Packs includes materials such as measuring tools, observation techniques, field guides, bug boxes, binoculars, fun activities for the trails, maps and other trail information, journals, first aid kits, trash bags, disposable gloves, bibliography of suggested reading, and more.
Family Adventure Packs were initially funded through a small grant from REI and circulated through the libraries in partnership with the Connecticut Library Consortium. Contact CFPA's education director for your public library to get involved.
